The various causes for distortion can be found in every step of the manufacturing process. Based on that the control of a component´s distortion only can be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach starting at the design phase of a part up to the final heat treatment. This fact was proven during the funded Collaborative Distortion Engineering project in Bremen between 2001 and 2011 (SFB570) for a lot of different manufacturing chains..
This new understanding was one of the main reasons to initiate the International Conferences on and Distortion Engineering (IDE). These conferences took place in Bremen (2005, 2008, 2011 and 2015) and in collaboration with the Quenching and Control of Distortion Conference in Chicago (QCD 2012). All these events have shown that a system-oriented point of view is necessary for the full understanding and solving of distortion problems. From 2018 it was changed to the meeting name International Conference on Quenching and Distortion Engineering (QDE) including quenching and it was decided to be held as a international conference focusing on wider heat treatment technology. The main objective of the QDE 2018 is again to discuss on an international level the state of the art in understanding basic mechanisms and interactions between different production steps leading to distortion and the measures to control changes in shape and dimensions including modeling and simulation in industrial production processes.
